Daniel asks…
Why so much conflict with the peanut allergy in school age children?
There is actually no extra time being taken with hand washing when you think of regular cleanliness. When thinking of healthy snacks for school breaks at school other foods can be just as economical. Even simple ham sandwich or carrot sticks, cucumber sticks are ready good for kids. I am not against peanut butter all together. I am for good nutrition! All together now. Can I hear a pause for working together on the situation instead of hostility and ousting?

Coach answers:
There is no conflict at our school. The children and teachers and lunchroom staff and well educated on the matter and know exactly who is and is not allergic and to what extent. Some kids can’t sit next to someone eating peanuts but other kids simply can’t consume the stuff themselves. The kids are taught that if you are sitting next to “Joe” then ask the lunch staff if your item is OK or if you should move a couple seats down.
The plain truth of the matter is that a school aged child is old enough to know their medical situation. I’ve seen it time and again where an allergic child will maturely speak up and say “I can’t have that” or “I’ll check with mom (or my list) first”. Just having a PB sandwich in the school room is NOT going to kill anyone and that is a gross over-dramatization by anyone who claims so.

is this healthy food for school children?
Main
Haddock and parsley sauce 85p
Daily special 85p
Pepperoni pizza 85p
Creamed potatoes 30p
Fresh carrots 30p
Garden peas 30p
Snacks
Pasta King with choice of sauces £1.55
Fresh Soup of the Day 50p
Jacket potato 55p
Macaroni cheese 85p
Deli/ salad bar selections
hi guys can provide me some details on whether that children in school would like and happy to eat

Coach answers:
Knowing children, they would choose not to have two vegetables and would use the 30p for crisps or something instead. So I’d suggest pricing a whole meal including veg and not making them optional.
Snacks is a whole other thing – are you talking about muesli bars, chocolate, fresh fruit, crisps and stuff? Many school canteens offer fresh fruit but not the crisps or chocolate.
The pepperoni pizza is not a very healthy option because it has a lot of salt and fat. And I don’t know what’s in Pasta King but if it’s ready made you’d need to look at the salt content of that too I suspect.

Snack ideas for school ages children?
My daughter attends a private elementary school and I am extremely disappointed in the snacks they provide for my child. She eats lunch at 10:30am and they don’t have snack until 2pm, where they offer junk food like cheetos, fruit loops, cookies, and popsicles. She is starving when she gets home at 3. I plan on speaking with my daughter’s teacher this week and will offer to bring in snacks for the entire class (my husband works for a food distribution company so it isn’t a problem for us to do this, especially since there are only 10 kids in the class), but first I wanted some suggestions. My daughter loves everything, so we do fruits and vegges for snacks at home, but I want some more practical, but still healthy snack ideas that 5-6 year old kids would enjoy. Any suggestions?

Coach answers:
Fruits
veggies
crackers
dry cereal
juice
gummies
pretzels
string cheese
muffins
granola bars
yogurt
raisins
teddy grahams
graham crackers
milk
nacho chips with a little cheese
popcorn
apple sauce
pudding

Nancy asks…
I’m so frustrated w/ the snacks and junk they are giving my child at school!?
Anyone else have this problem? My 5 year old daughter has gained 4 pounds since starting school in August and hasn’t had a growth spurt. Several times a week they are having a class party or a child will have a birthday and the parents will bring in cupcakes – which I understand, we brought in the mini cupcakes for her birthday too, so I’m not some crazy health nut or anything – but the teacher gives out M&M’s to the kids when they do well in class (what ever happened to stickers or smileys?), they have snack every afternoon that the school provides – today it was COOKIES and CHEETOS. We’ve tried to be nice and have offered to provide healthy snacks for the class for the year since my husband works for a food distribution company, but they said they don’t have enough room in the school kitchen. I don’t want my daughter to be the only one sitting there eating an apple while the rest have cookies, I also don’t want to be the parent that ruins it for everyone by making a big deal. It’s a small, private elementary school, any suggestions on what I should do?

Coach answers:
Yes, you should have your daughter be the only one sitting there eating an apple (or another healthy snack that she likes) while the rest have cookies.
Next week there will be two of them.
Next month there will be five.
And next year the school will have realized there’s capital to be made from “we do healthy eating”, and the cookies will be gone.
